Home Remedies for Cold Sore

preventing cold soresCold sores are never fun, especially when you’ve got a relatively important event coming up. It never hurts to look your best, and cold sores take that possibility away from you. Most of the time you’re going to be given the same options over and over, the doctors will tell you that you need antivirals and begin to prescribe you the medication. It almost seems like it’s a vicious circle, you take the antivirals but the breakouts keep occurring. As if that wasn’t bad enough, there’s also the fact that the medicine can come with an abundance of side effects. Cold sores are always going to be heart-breaking, but what’s the point of taking medication if the side effects are worse than the virus itself?

Preventing Cold Sores

Understanding why you have cold sores is the first part the process, the next part is understanding how you can go about preventing cold sores. Preventing cold sores is completely possible, and there are people who have the herpes simplex virus that have perfected their homemade remedies. We’ve all got very different makes when it comes to our bodies, so what works for me might not necessarily work for you; that’s why it’s important to find the perfect fit. Now remember, you can’t actually cure yourself and get rid of the herpes simplex virus forever; you can definitely figure out how to constantly control breakouts, though.

  • Cover it Up – This sounds pretty silly, but covering up a cold sore is a common past time that people have practiced. We don’t mean cover it up with a scarf or something, but with a substance like petroleum jelly. It will speed up the healing process, and make sure that the bacteria is kept in check. Preventing cold sores has never been so simple.
  • Change Your Toothbrush – That’s right, the virus might just be hanging out on the thing you use every single morning; your toothbrush. If you have constant breaks that are rather severe, this is something you really need to do. If you want to prevent cold sores, this is the place to start.
  • Sunscreen – When you’re out and about in the sun you need to be protected, and putting sunscreen on your lips is going to lower the occurrence rate of cold sores. If you want results, make sure the sunscreen has an SPF of 15 or higher.
  • Don’t Fiddle With It – The more you play with your cold sore, the worse it’s going to get. When you’ve got a cold sore you need to keep your hands away from it, as well as making direct contact with anybody else (as in kissing and such). When you mess around with it, it’s going to just spread and get even worse.
  • Painkillers – Now this is pretty drastic, but it can be really painful when you’re dealing with a cold sore outbreak. Look for a bottle of aspirin, ibuprofen or any kind of acetaminophen if the pain becomes unbearable; it should help you relax and be able to deal with everything accordingly.
